Half the board never moves. Of the thirty-four keys in these three rows, seventeen are dimmed because Colemak leaves them exactly where QWERTY has them — q w a h m and the whole of z x c v b, plus the punctuation. The seventeen marked keys are the entire relearning job. That is the bargain Colemak strikes against Dvorak, which keeps only two letters, a and m, in place: you rebuild half the muscle memory instead of all of it.
